Parashar's father's name was Shaktimuni and his mother's name was Adhyashyanti. Shaktamuni was the son of Vasishtha Rishi and the father of Vedavyasa. On this basis, Parashar was the grandson of Vashishtha. Shaktamuni's marriage was made from the ascetic Vaishya chitramukh's daughter adhyashyanti. महर्षि पराशर के जीवन की आश्चर्यजनक सत्य कथाएं 'पराशर' शब्द का अर्थ है - 'पराशूणाति पापानीति पराशरः' अर्थात् जो दर्शन-स्मरण करने से ही समस्त पापों का नाश करता है, वही पराशर है। पराशर के पिता का नाम शक्तिमुनि था और उनकी माता का नाम अद्यश्यन्ती था। शक्तिमुनि वसिष्ठऋषि के पुत्र और वेदव्यास के पितामह थे। इस आधार पर पराशर वसिष्ठ के पौत्र थे। शक्तिमुनि का विवाह तपस्वी वैश्य चित्रमुख की कन्या अदृश्यन्ती से हुआ था। कहते हैं ऋषि पराशर 12 वर्ष तक अपनी माता के गर्भ में रहे थे माता के गर्भ में रहते हुए पराशर ने पिता के मुँह से ब्रह्माण्ड पुराण सुना था।
